"In Service of Science, Preserving the Human Brain"
Who We Are
The AIIMS Bhubaneswar Human Brain Tissue Repository (HBTR) was established in 2021 in the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine, as a satellite centre of the ICMR-funded Brain Bank Network India.
Our mission is to drive progress in neuroscience by enabling access to carefully preserved, high-quality brain tissue that supports scientific breakthroughs. Every donation tells a story. Every sample brings scientists one step closer to answers.
We are also home to Eastern India's first dedicated Brain Museum, open for educational visits by medical students, researchers, and the public.
Research Excellence
Ongoing studies on postmortem interval, RNA integrity, and cerebrovascular disease
Brain Museum
Eastern India's first brain museum — open for educational visits
Training
Hands-on training for MD Pathology residents in brain autopsy and neuropathology
Network
Connected to NIMHANS and PGIMER as part of the national brain bank network

Ongoing Research
Current projects advancing the frontiers of neuropathology
Effect of Post-mortem Interval (PMI) on Brain Tissue
Assessment of histopathological and immunohistochemical quality of brain tissue across varying PMIs (1 to >30 hours) — critical for establishing biobanking standards in tropical India.
RNA and DNA Integrity Studies
Evaluation of RNA and DNA integrity at different PMIs. Assessment of mRNA of Cytochrome C1 (CYC1) using qRT-PCR across brain regions.
Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD) Pathobiology
Expression profiling of molecular markers related to ferroptosis-mediated cell death in CSVD cases, with multimodal tissue evaluation.
Multimodal RNA/Tissue Quality Evaluation
Comprehensive assessment of RNA integrity and tissue quality in postmortem brain specimens across varying PMIs in a tropical Indian brain biobank.
